Subject: Classic apps problems in OSX |
Comment: Since installing OSX on my G4, I am unable to launch some apps in Classic mode. Specifically, I have been unable to use Corel WP(3.5), Eudora 5.1, Stuffit Deluxe, and Toast Titanium. There may be others. The message displayed is that Eudora, eg, has unexpectedly quit. This happens from both OSX and rebooting in 0S9.2.2. BTW - other classic apps (Word, FileMaker Pro, etc) work fine.

Reply: (edit)Start out with throwing out Prefs while booted from start up in 9. Prob solved I believe. You might also want to give the PRAM a whirl before starting back up in X. Thatis of course, after youv'e addressed the Pref task. (Apple-Option-r- p. 4 chimes). TOUCHDOWN SEAHAWKS

Reply: (edit)And for apps that have OS X versions, like Eudora and Toast, use those. I'm pretty sure WP 3.5 doesn't work in Classic :( p

Reply: (edit)Thanks, guys. Some of the problems were fixed. Zapping the pram enabled Eudora (I didn't find any preferences). BTW - The beta version of Eodora for OSX is pretty shaky ( I have to continually enter passwords). The bigger question, though is why will apps that have always worked in 9 not now launch, even when operating in OS9? Any ideas? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)The beta version of Eudora has expired. The final version is quite stable and has been since about b17. Your password problem is probably due to your failure to allow Eudora to use the Keychain to store passwords or unreliable mail servers. I've seen both. If you boot into OS 9 - not Classic, but actually boot OS 9 - do the apps in question work? p

Reply: (edit)Thanks. No, Corel WP, Stuffit Deluxe, and Toast Titanium 5 will not launch, even when booted in 9.2.2. They had all worked fine prior to OSX being installed. Most peculiar.

Reply: (edit)There's a version of Stuffit for OS X. Toast Titanium is a Carbon app so it should work in both. Are you booting with full extensions in 9.2.2, or are you still using a stripped-down Classic extension set? p

Reply: (edit)I'm sure Pickle would agree that if your booting to OS9 and you have certain Apps. that wont launch, well, you have either an extention or Pref prob. Using the new stuffit for X wont affect the workings of 9 if your only booting to 9 at the time. Think of it as a light switch. Light wont turn on until you throw the switch right? So how can anything in X work if it's not on? There's an easy fix to all this. First, , if you have any tools (Norton, ect.) run them first. If that doesn't fix the prob then I'd say do a clean install. If you have to write down the Apps. that are giving you trouble. After the Clean install is finished go into your previous System folder and "ONE AT A TIME" add those Apps. back to your new System folder. Launch each one before you go get another one. It's the process of elimination. Since it's only a couple of Apps. that are giving you this headache it should go rather quickly & smoothly. (I still lean towards the Prefs though) Let us Know how it works out. TOUCHDOWN SEAHAWKS
