does anyone know of some application to view .AVI files? apparently neither Windows Media Player 7, nor QuickTime, nor AVI to QT utility will do it. also, how do you join segmented movie files? do you have to buy "pro" software?

Sounds like you might need a DIVX codec. Other threads here describe similar problems and their solutions.

thanks. i went ahead and found DivX.com, and downloaded the software. i also went from QT 4 pro to QT 5, as advised. still can't view .avi files. QT still looking for the right compressor, can't find it. anybody got any other ideas?
What kinda error message are you getting? I get a "Unable to find a compressor...blah blah"...just check what kinda video compressor was used to create the avi and download that...you can find out by checking the Movie Properties from QT i think. Most likely you need one of the Indeo Codecs. But even with that and DivX you wont be able to get any sound out of them...DivX says its Apple's fault and Apple says nothing :-(

I've got about 6 codecs and players (which convert and save as mov files.) found them all on a google search.
its a bit of hit and miss since these avi's are in a variety of compressions. (got to try all of them until the playback is tolerable) hope that helps.
quicktime sucks because of the limited formats it plays (proprietary issues)

Pah. QuickTime is the best media platform out there, bar none. It plays back *far* more - and at better quality - than any other major media player.
The problem is with the people who think DivX is a legitimate form of compressing movies *besides* those used in the now-dead DIVX DVD players. If people would just use real standards, we wouldn't have this problem.
