Subject: can't switch OSX and 9 OS: Mac OS9 / OSX CPU/Ram: 9500/G4 xlr8
|
Comment: Hello, I have installed 10.2.6 on my 9500 upgraded to G4, but I can't "clean" switch between OSX and 9. The processor upgrade card is a nice xlr8 MAChCarrier SSE/MPe with a G4 at 500MHz. The soft/drivers I use is xlr8's at the 9 side, and PowerLogic's at the X side (the last xlr8's X version I purchased from them won't work here at all ???) I use XPostFacto to boot X, with no problem at all. But when I try to boot back to 9 (not Classic), my computer wont boot at all (black screen), so I have to zap pram a couple of times and insert xlr8's firmware emergency floppy and then it boots in 9. Any help, please? Thank you. Juan Carlos

Reply: (edit)Don't quote me on this - but i have a sneaking suspiscion that a computer can be upgraded only so far - and the Powermac 9500 only has the logic board bios (regardless of processor) - to take at maximum - Mac OS 9.1. It's obvious that you "can" get it to kind of work the way you're doing it - but as for a seamless solution - it may simply not be able to cut the mustard on the swapping scenario you've attempted - as it's architecture is out of date (according to Apple). I could of course be wrong. Try partitioning the drive 30/70 - 70 for Mac OS X - and run Mac OS 9.1 for starters on the 30/ Partition. Experiment. tell us how you went =) cheers clockwork

Reply: (edit)clockwork, thanks. I have two disks, one for 9 and one for X. Well, the OSX software from daystar is supossed to work but it doesn't in my computer so I don't know what to think about, maybe I'm doing something wrong I don't know for sure. I can boot with no problem at all in to X, but I can't get back to 9 without zapping pram first... I will investigate for sure, I have to :) Juan Carlos

Reply: (edit)It was a card problem as I was told by the xlr8's tech support staff. They sent me a new card!! and now everything's fine except a ram problem that doesn't let me use their cache enabler in X, it works fine in 9: the dimms pass all tests but I was told that it would more than probably be a ram problem, so I would like to ask where is a good place to buy ram for G4 upgraded pci Macs and if there is anything to be taken in to account when choosing ram for these upgraded machines. Thank you, Juan Carlos
