I've recently inherited a beige G3 from a friend. It boots up and works like a charm, but I cannot seem to shut it down. When I choose shut down from the menu or by hitting the power button, the system just reboots.
Any ideas?

Yes indeed. It shuts down fine when I boot with extensions turned off. Is there a culprit I should be looking for, or should I just wait 'till I upgrade to Jaguar and hope that fixes the problem?

Well, Jaguar would fix the problem, but I would try
to figure out the Extension problem. You can use the Extensions Manager Control
Panel to enable and disable Extensions in the
System.Open the Extensions Manager and set the
Extension set to "Mac OS 9 All" (assuming you're
running OS 9). Reboot and see if the problem is
gone. If it is not, set the Extension set to "OS 9
Base" and check again if the problem is gone.Once you get the computer to shut down properly,
you can begin the process of turning Extensions
on until the problem comes back, so that you
know what the culprit is.Hopefully, the problem is with a 3rd party
extension that you don't need anyway. If it is a
problem with a needed System extension, you
may need to reinstall your system to correct it.If, by using the Extensions Manager, you cannot
get the computer to shut down, you may need to
reinstall your system.Let us know how you make out.
