can't open .doc on Mac

I am on a MacOS 9.0.2 which i want to upgrade...but as $$ speaks i'm still behind..I was wondering is there any microsoft office,corel,or wordperfect software that is downloadable for the mac which would open the .doc files I recieved in emails.???? Thanks ahead of time
