Tried holding down on the "c" key after hearing the startup
bong?

Is your firmware up-to-date? Some older machine require a
firmware update before installing X, and this must be done in
OS 9 prior to installing X. A list of machines and their
update, if needed, can be found here...

remember to boot from the cd- don't bother clicking the
installer in os9, just boot from the CD instead. On a G3 it
can take quite a while for the 10.3 install to start, too.
Unplug all scsi and usb devices (other than mouse and
keyboard, of course!) before you start..

Well, my firmware is up to date, but for some reason when i hold the C key to boot from the cd-rom, i can hear the drive working, but it only boots into OS 9...any suggestions?

Yes..instead of 'C' , hold down command-shift-option-delete
and keep holding it down..it may take quite a while for the cd to get recognized by the mac so you might have a question mark for a while .
When I first installed OSX it took 10 minutes before it booted into the cd (I did have a third party drive, however)

golly, this reminds me of the 'crowd control' ad apple ran in the eighties... but the roles are reversed, now. it seems there are alot of people with great intentions and no idea how to provide a concrete solution.

so add me to the mix...

do a google search for a program called 'xpostfacto.' this program enables loading OsX onto systems on which it was not supposed to be supported, as well as patching drivers such as ATA and other things that OsX finds problematic. It runs from within os9.

download it, put your panther disk in the bay, make the right selections for target and source drives and go, go, go! the computer will restart and load. maje sure you read up on system requirements from the site before you start.

what kind of G3? wallstreet, lombard, kanga? desktop? the site has a list of compatability issues with OsX and various machines, check it out, its quite a rescource.

forget all that crap about holding keys down... if it 'just worked' you wouldnt be here. and you knew all that already.

let me know if any of this was helpful, as for me, i will continue looking around for a copy of 'toast 4 deluxe' and OsX.0 and OsX.2

again, that was xpostfacto, on the internet.

once you get everything loaded, and it all works, if you want to get back into Os9, hold down the option key at bootup. it works for me.

There is room enough for two.
