Starting about a week ago, when I try to connect to the internet with my G4 (9.2.2), I get a message saying that the Remote Access is not responding properly and that I should check the configuration of my control panels. On the rare occasion that I do get online, it is so slow as to be unusable and then I get disconnected. What might be the problem? I tried changing my ISP. That didn't help. I'm using a dialup service and an internal 56K modem.

Since the problem occurs with two different ISPs,
it's probably not the ISP. This leaves either: 1) a
problem with the line; 2) a problem with software
or settings; 3) a problem with the modem.1) Fax machines and other devices can interfere
with the function of modems. If you're using a
splitter, it could be a problem with that. Try
another jack in your house, or another line if
possible.2) Invalid DNS settings in the TCP/IP Control
Panel can cause problems once you're
connected, such as slow Internet access. Trash
the TCP/IP Preference file and set the TCP/IP
Control Panel to "Connect Using PPP" and
"Configure Using PPP Server". Most ISPs load
DNS servers dynamically. It could be a problem with the Modem Script. Try
selecting "Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.34)" in
the Modem Control Panel. This will slow the
modem down a bit as well, which can help in
some circumstances. To completely rule out software, perform a clean
install of OS 9.2. You can revert to the Previous
System Folder if it does not fix the problem.3) If you've tried 1 and 2, and it is definitely not a
problem with the ISP, it could be a problem with
the modem. Save the $200 or more it will cost to replace the modem, and spring for Cable
or DSL (if it's available where you live).James
