Hi, the finder on my friend's computer is
damaged. I have tried to boot from the cd
(holding the c key down from the moment
I hit the power button, but it won't boot up.
I can boot it up from my Norton's cd
though. Any ideas?

Try it the old fashioned way. Put the CD in
and allow it to mount on the desktop. Via
Control Panels (Startup Disk) select it as
the start up disk and restart. Good luck!

Sorry forgot to mention it-is the Apple CD
clean (no smears or smudges on it?)
This could also stop it doing what it
should!

Hi, Yes I cleaned the cd and I can't get to
the desktop because when the computer
(it's an iMac) starts up, I get an error type
41 coming up (that's how I know my finder
is damaged). I just reset my PRAM, but I
can't get it to boot off the cd while holding
the c key.

If you can boot up with Norton, you can
therefore, I presume. run Disc Doctor.
What did it find/fix? You should run it a
second or even a third time if needed until
you get "No problems found".
Have you rebuilt the desktop? (I don't
know if it would help)
If none of that works...Pickles are you
there?

Yep, ran Disk Doctor and it told me what I
already know, that my finder is damaged
and that I should make an alias, which I
did, but I can't get to ... Agh! Like I said, I
have reset the PRAM, and I also tried the
old-fashioned way of holding down
"command, option, shift delete" (as
ooposed to holding the c key) when I
restart, but then I get a blinking folder,
with intermittent question mark and
smiley face.

Your Finder is fine, most likely.

Boot from the Norton CD and throw out the Finder Preferences file.

Restart from the hard disk.

i'm having a similar problem. i can't boot from any CD. One interesting quirk I've found is that the internal cd drive has the same scsi id as the hard drive. other than starting up, the cd works fine although it slows the computer and occasionally will cause a crash. hope someone can suggest something that might rectify the problem.

peace,

marv

The CD and hard drive can't possibly be the same SCSI ID if they both work. What Mac is it?
