Comment: hey guys. Ive been a pc user since i had my 286 epson computer, so when my roomie brought home this 1997 mac computer i didnt know where to start. The system has an ethernet port, but has no web browser. In an attempt to install netscape 3.01, I realized i needed to install Stuffit expander, but when i tried to open the installer, it attempted to convert the .hqx or the .bin file to text. The "kind" is listed as 'text' in the info for those files. How do i change the "kind" for these files so that i can install these programs. Any help would be great. thanks

Reply: (edit)This is a chicken and egg situation as you need Stuffit to unpack the Stuffit download. Look thru the following site: http://www.jagshouse.com Alternatively try and find an old MAC front cover CD which has Netscape as usually Stuffit was also included. You may be able to use Netscape 4or IE4 on the MAC, once you have sorted Stuffit out.

Reply: (edit)HQX files ARE text files, actually, 'bin' files are binary tho.. stuffit will expand any file regardless how it's type is set, if it is a legitimate archive..so don't worry about that.. If you downloadedthe stuffit self expanding installer (either a 'SEA' file, or a straight installer) ) on the pc, it would be corrupted during the transfer to mac and would no longer be recognized as a mac executable..so you've got to get one off of a mac disk or from the web using the mac to download it..if the mac can't browse the web (as you say) you've got to do a search on a mac disk for either the installer or 'sea' using 'stuffit' or 'expander' as keywrds..the copies of stuffit expander on those cdroms never need third party expanders... %00
