Cannot format new Firewire Drive

I have a firewire enclosure and recently installed a new drive into it. The drive shows up in disk utility, and the info on the drive states in can be formatted. When I select the drive and erase, the system says partitioning, but eventually nothing happens. I have run a diagnostics on the drive, and all tests are passed. I have also updated the firmware for the ADS drive enclosure. Any thoughts?
