I know this might be a dumb question but I want to know if it's possible to physically connect a pc to a mac so I could transfer some multi-media files from pc to mac. I would then like to burn the files onto a cdr from the mac.
Merry Christmas everyone.

OK pickle, here what you've been waiting for. How do you do it?? I need serious guidance here.
I ran out to buy a LAN/ethernet cross cable to hook up the MAc and PC. When I tried to install the LAN cable through W98's "direct cable connection". There were options for serial and parallel cable connection only but nothing for LAN. Where did I go wrong or is it impossible to connect through LAN with W98? Are there free softwares out there that can help in this regard? Moreover, I am unfamiliar with Mac and have no idea how to set up the Mac to make the transfer. Any help from anyone out there would be much appreciated.

Like I said, W98 only listed parallel and serial ports as available options. When I clicked on "install new port" it couldnt detect the LAN crossover cable even after rebooting. That was why I asked if it was even possible to link the computers that way. I'm totally stumped. Please advise.

Sounds like a Windoze problem, not a Mac problem. It should work but if your Ethernet card in the Windoze box isn't working, there isn't much we Mac folks can do to help...

G'day,
(See also message 133785 on the WIN9x notice board). The Direct Connection option in windows only uses serial (COM1..) or parallel (LPT1...) ports. Hence your ethernet cable will not work - what did you plug it into?? If it was a network card, then you should be able to set up a network connection with the MAC if it has a network card. I believe the later MACs have an Ethertalk protocol built in. Some have expansion slots where ethernet cards can be inserted.
So, your problem is trying to use the Direct Cable option- the software for the client/ server method will not run on the MAC anyway.
It appears to be a pseudo network anyway.
The MAC also has a network protocol on RS422 called Appletalk but I've no idea how you would link a PC with it.
The slow option, of course, is to use a comms program on each machine and connect them together with a null modem cable (perhaps even modem) but you would have to be aware of the RS422 connection with the MAC.You could then set one of them up as a simple BBS and then upload/ download as required. You would have to convert any machine specific files of course, but I think the MAC is better at this (File Exchange??) There is also the option of MAC or Windows emulators, but I have no idea what is out there on the market.
To clear up any confusion that you might have concerning the DCC visit this really useful site:

www.macwindows.com might be able to help too.
good luck,
Elric
