Comment:
I am new to this forum. I have an iBook with OS 9.2. I have discovered that many things now run only on OS X. However, I don't want to give up the things that run on OS 9.2. Is there a way to have both operating systems on the same computer? Thanks.
Sure. You can just install OS X and do it as an upgrade and it will leave your OS 9 system intact. Or you could partition your disk and install each system on their own partition.
I would recommend just installing OS X on your main partition. You can select your startup disk each time you want to switch to the other OS or if you don't know how to do that you can just hold down the option button while booting the computer. In OS 9 you click the Apple in the top left, select 'Control Panels' then choose 'Startup Disk'. In OS X you launch System Preferences then choose 'Startup Disk' from the options presented there.
Also, just a little FYI: If you have the first iBook (referred to as a clamshell. Non-white colored plastic and only a USB port with no FireWire) you can only install up to OS X 10.3.9. If you have the clamshell variety with a FW connection or any of the G3 or G4 iBooks they can take up to the latest OS.
