1) Yes. Sort of. Get on Apple's developer site and check out the IP over FireWire package.

2) And how, pray tell, do you propose to connect them to the Internet?

If you're going to connect them to the internet, please get a switch or a hub and forego the crossover.

Oh, you can definitely connect two iMacs through the Internet to share files.

It's the getting them connected to the Internet in the first place that's a bitch ;)
