I am permanently connected to a broadband network.
How can connect to my mac from a remote site for file transfers and/or web page hosting?

You will probably need to run an FTP server or WWW server.
If you're connecting from a Mac, you can just turn on File Sharing and check "Allow connections over TCP/IP."
The Mac OS, starting with 8.something, has a built-in WWW server called Personal Web Sharing. Don't use it. It sucks. Get MacHTTP instead.

As far as FTP servers, well, go to versiontracker.com and do a search for "FTP server" and look for freeware.

Personal web sharing, or FTP. Look into setting your mac up with web server software (personal web sharing is Apples solution) for page hosting, or FTP server for file transfers. RUMPUS is really good for FTP server. Incidentally, If you go to 'chooser/appleshare' you find 'server ip address' at the bottom. You can use this to connect to your home-based mac as long as you know the ip address and access is allowed.

Oh, something I forgot to mention earlier - running a server is very likely prohibited by your ISP's Terms of Service. You wouldn't want to do anything that might get your contract cancelled, and from what I've seen on /. lately, ISPs are actually going to start cracking down on this. Just be careful, that's all.
