Comment:

I have an "early" DVD imac (now CD write
capability) networked to a Windows 98
PC with a burner.
I would like to use this burner to create
backups of Mac files
I use DAVE to connect the imac to the pc
and transfer the files to a "holding" area
on the PC.
I then transfer the files to a CD using
either Nero or NTI CD-Maker. All of the
.exe, .jpg, mp3, .sit and .hqx work fine.
The CD burning software trashes the
long names but the files open when I
load the CD on imac. Now the problem
the same approach doesn't work for .smi
and .sea files. Resediting after brining the
file back sometimes works but... I would
like to use this approach to clean up my
machine. Any assistance would be
appreciated. I would also like to hace the
long file names but.....
Thnx
Chris

Try stuffing the .smi and .sea files before burning.

...because those files have resource forks, which get killed on the PC. That also probably explains why you can sometimes fix them with ResEdit.

JPG files and the like don't have resource forks, or at least they aren't vital to the file's functionality.

What about the issue of the long filenames being cut? I've noticed this too, that if I have a CD-R burned in Windows and transfer the files to my mac, the filenames are all screwed. Why is this? Does this have to do with ISO 9660 formatting?

Probably, yes. If you can figure out a way to burn HFS disks on the PC, you might be able to avoid that problem.
