Broken Ethernet?

Hey folks. I'm very new to Macs and just inheritted an old beige G3 from a friend. Well, the thing boots up, but I can't get the ethernet to work. I have it plugged into a hub right next to another computer and while I get an activity light from the other machine, I get nothing from the G3. I've changed cables, ports, all the basics.

Is there anything in software I can try before concluding that I need a new ethernet card?

Does "Built-In Ethernet" show in the TCP/IP
Control Panel or the Appletalk Control Panel? If it
does, this is probably an indication the computer
can see the Ethernet fine, but the port itself is not
functioning.

Whether the software is functioning properly or
not, you will get a link light on the hub to show that
the connection has been made (as long as the
cable is a standard, working patch cable).

Since you are not getting a link light, you are
correct, you need a new PCI Ethernet card.

I'm answering my own questions again...

the hub I'm using is 100-base-T only. I made the mistake of assuming my built-in adapter on a beige G3 was 10/100. Apparently its only 10. Once I plugged the system right into the source I got a signal and everything worked just fine.

...or that. Good job at figuring it out.
