It is not possible to boot from a .dmg as that is just a file on your hard disk, and not a volume until you mount it (and you can't mount it until after you start up). You can, however, burn it to a CD and boot from the CD.

I tried burning my .dmg file of OSX 10.2 onto a CD using toast. But had no luck. Copied contents of .dmg file to partition. Then I tried using Mac Volume to burn a bootable CD, but toast wouldn't recognize the partition as bootable. What should I be looking for? What is the proper method for pulling this off?

Mount the image and then drag the mounted file
to toast.(not the contents, but the icon it's self).

Thanks for the advice. I tried your suggestion.
.
I mounted Disc Images on desktop, opened
Toast(selected mac Volume) dragged Disc
Image into Toast. I then clicked "Select"
button to choose "Bootable" option, but when
I try to "OK" that choice, Toast tells me
that there is no System folder on the disc and
that I won't be able to boot from it. Is this
normal? What should I look for to verify a
system folder?
Thanks.

If you get that message it means the mounted
image is either corrupt or not bootable.
My only suggestion is to download the file again.
