Comment: I bought a gutted Color Classic Mac with a modified motherboard pulled from a PowerMac 5500 inside. Now, I need to buy an BOOTABLE external CD-ROM drive for this machine. Question: what model of external CD-ROM drive should I buy that will guranteed the "bootable" requirement? I need specific model names. And where do I go about finding these drives? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)The only way I can guarantee it is if you buy an Apple-branded drive. Most third-party drives are bootable, but not all are. p

Reply: (edit)ANY Apple-brand external CD-ROM drive is bootable? And, whhat's a place (website?) that I can find and buy one of those? And third, does PowerMac 5500's motherboard (BIOS as in PC) supports booting from CD-ROM drive?

Reply: (edit)Apple-branded CD-ROM drives always have been bootable, and will remain so. All Macs support booting from a CD-ROM, but only Macs after about the IIvx support booting with the "c" key held down. For earlier Macs, as well as most non-Apple CD-ROM drives, you can hold cmd-opt-shift-delete on startup to force a boot from the CD-ROM. Used CD-ROM drives are probably most easily found on eBay. p
