Do you have the MacOS system install disk? Put the disk into the cd drive, restart your computer. When you see the screen begin to come on, hold down the "c" key and boot the computer up from the disk. When the screen comes on, go into the utilities folder, go into Disk FirstAid. Highlight the harddrive, and run the repair function. This usually straightens the problem out. There's also a Disk FirstAid program in the harddrive, utilities folder, but this will only verify, or scan, the system and not repair it. In order to use the repair function, you have to boot up from the MacOS system install cd. And I hope that from now on, you'll back up your important programs. Good luck.
