Comment:

I have a PowerBook 1400cs, 166MHz, 32MB RAM, 10 Gig HD, Floppy & CD-ROM modules.

I am trying to get the laptop to boot from the CD-ROM (USING THE ORIGINAL 1400 OS DISK) but it just won’t do it. I am holding down all the right keys and have reset everything I can think of but nothing happens. I have tried downloading the original OS from Apple and putting it on floppies but after showing the “Happy Mac” it just spits out the floppy disk and goes back to showing the “?”. What can I do, or what am I doing wrong?

I did that. Most anyone that uses a Mac at length would know that.

If you are a long time mac user than why dont you have more than one boot CD? It's very important to keep multiple copies of different versions. 7.5, 7.5.3, 7.5.5, 7.6, 8, etc.

I actually have all Mac OS versions ever released on CD-ROM and Floppy. The problem is not with the disk! I have booted many other systems with this disk including other identical laptops of the same model. If you would like to argue with someone who is A+ certified and is currently working on getting certified for work on Apple computers you are in for a ride of your life. I am having these problems because training today does not cover legacy models.

smills,

Forgive me if you've already tried this but for powerbook1400's the CD-ROM boot key combo is shift-option-command-delete.

Try that. Someone mentioned pressing "C" but that's not for the 1400.

Also if you are trying to reinstall the OS, could you mount the Powerbook as a HDD from a different Classic Mac? Or boot from the PCMCIA slot (with one of those minidrives or CF cards).

Thank you much for your comment MadBiker.

I have tried the key combination for the 1400 with no luck. Someone told me the CD-ROM moduals were unreliable, and often failed quickly.

I would like to try mounting the laptop to another mac, but do not have the cables and such to do so, I am on the hunt for them.

All I can guess is that the CD-ROM drive is faulty in some way, but it seems booting from the Floppy Drive also doesn't work?

If you have an external SCSI CD-ROM drive, you should try that with it.

The only other thing I can think of is to reset the PMU. Instructions are here:

LOL! Listen... young'n. I have been working on macs for a looonnnggg time and if you are trying to get apple certified well that's nice and dandy, but thats an orange and you are asking about an apple. Mac's haven't been "Mac's" for sometime now. And A+, oh my... when I got my A+, it was before they made you renew it every 3 years or so now so it's been awhile.

And if you really did use a "Mac at length" you would have multiple copies of boot up disc's to have tried, or figured out the CD-ROM might not be working by now. Also you probably would know how to use a simple key combination on the key board(not going to tell you, look it up, heh), an appletalk cable(serial or ethernet), and know how to use the powerbook as a slave drive to another mac so you could reload the OS and what-not on the powerbook. OR... you would probably know how to pull the drive and mount it in another IDE capable macintosh so you could reload the OS.

But hey, you keep on thinking you are a long time mac user. I think I've given you more hints to fix your issue than you needed, if you haven't fixed it that is, kid.
