From previous post...I am now getting a blinking Blue Earth icon, then the ? inside a folder at startup. Checked cables, all OK. Appears that it isn't even checking HD's for System Software. When booting with CD, System Profiler doesn't show that any HDs exist. Please help.

You checked the internal cables too, especially power cables to the hard disk(s)?
What about zapping the PRAM?
Is there any chance your hard disk could have just died?
p

Don't panic it's nothing, your startup disk is set to network volume, simply reboot with nothing in the drive wait alittle if need be (2-4mins)globe should go away leaving you with a brief ?mark if this happens press and hold eithier the apple button or ctrl or shift(I'm not too sure at the moment),Anyways moving along once youe os is starting up hold shift untill it says extenions off, once you see your desktop,go to control panel select startup disk and select either of the os volumes you want for startup and relax.(your mac is fine)

Andy, you might want to re-read his post, as well as his previous posts in this forum. The internal IDE controller appears to have lost at least one of its two channels, because devices on that channel simply are *not* showing up.
p

I still haven't read the other reply ,but I do
know what the blue globe is for cause I
had the same problem at one point,as for
ide channels not showing up I've never
had that problem so I'm not gonna give
advice that could make it worse!.
But if possible I would suggest using the
apple hardware test cd-rom it should find
and point out all problems to do with
hardware!

Checking the internal cables will do you
no-good whatsoever. The PRAM is out
the window as well. The Hardware Test
will show nothing. Tech Tool will also tell
you that everything passed. I've had the
Globe, file, ? also. I also have Tech
support on both of my iMacs. Follow Andy
while holding down the "Shift" key. If that
doesn't work you know you have a major
extention prob. Do a clean install. This
gives you a previous system folder.
When you restart the globe will go away.
It will be a brand knew computer again.
Bummer is, that you have to go through
the process of elimination from your
previous system folder to your new one to
find out what screwed what up. . . If that
doesn't work, I can tell you honestly, you
have a good old fashion CRASH. Erase
& re-install. I know that hurts but, if you
have your s--- backed-up it's really easy. I
could get into custom erase and install
but that's a little more time consuming on
my end. Good Luck

Wow. So much horribly wrong advice.
Read the other posts, folks. This guy has a dead IDE channel on his controller. Why else would *no* devices be showing up on that channel, and the same devices show up fine if moved to the other channel?
p

Here's your prob Alex. Go to your control
panels and choose start-up disk. Make
sure your "Network" option is not turned
ON. That's why your getting the Globe. It
thinks it's on a Network. In OSX the globe
in the system prefs is the sign for network
(internet as well). Turn it off. Prob solved.
If not. Clean Install like I posted earlier. If
your time is important to you then it would
be the fastest way. Trouble shootin
software can me very consuming.P.S. You need to tone it down Pickle.
Your not the only one who know's Mac on
this board.Later

You can tell him to try that all you want, buddy, but it's not going to help anything if his hard disk is plugged into the dead IDE channel...
Pretty damn hard to do a clean install when the hard disk doesn't show up, huh?
p

Why would his HD suddenly plug itself
into a dead channel. Computers only do
what you tell them to. They don't make
mistakes. People do. Seems like this
guy Alex did something he shouldn't
have, agreed?Rule of thumb. If you can't boot to a start-
up disk, then you almost certainly have a
Hardware issue and the Hardware test
CD will rarely pick it up if it's a network
prob. I know that that's hard for you to
swallow Pickle but in many ways it's a
fact.NOW ABOUT THAT JAVA THING.
TOUCHDOWN SEAHAWKS

The IDE channel died; the hard drive just happened to be plugged into it at the time. Would you PLEASE go read the rest of his posts before talking out of your arse any more?
p

It seems as though you know the history
on this thread a hel1 of a lot better than I.
I'm just going by the first post on this
page and it doesn't seem like there's
anything "Fancy" about it. You thrilling
comeback about me talkin out my arse is
laughable. I don't see one ioda about an
IDE channel anywhere. That's "your"
diagnosis. I have mine, albeit a vague
one. I've been lookin around the board
and you seem to think that your quite the
authority. It's to bad with all your
knowledge you can't figure this guys
nightmare out. Tell me something, why
is it that you speak so many words but
you don't get anything accomplished? I
mean, you've put out 5 threads on this
topic with no help whatsoever. I say he
has a HD prob involving his network
configs... It also might have something to
do with the firmware. Ever thought of that
genious? Since I have AppleCare I'm
going to personally see just what the fuc*
is wrong with Alex' Mac. In the mean time
here's a link.kbase.info.apple.com/cgi-bin/

TOUCHDOWN SEAHAWKS

Alex posted about three or four other threads on this problem.
Go read them before you post again. I'm not going to say it again.
p

I think you have to give me this one
Pickle.Alex? Since you can't go to your startup
disk try this.Start your computer while holding down
the "option", "o" anf "f" keys. This will take
you to a grey screen. type in "reset-
nvram" (No " marks, all lower case) then
hit return. then type in "reset-all". Hit
return again.reset-nvram
reset-all
This resets all of your firmware.
Something obviously got in there and
currupted it. It will at least get you to your
start up disk so you can go into your
control panels, if not fix the entire prob
itself.. Try it. Remember, after your
computer restarts, if you still get the globe
you'll have to put your restore CD in and
restart again holding down the c key. Let
us know how it turned out.
TOUCHDOWN SEAHAWKS

I don't have to give you anything. If you post anything else in this thread without providing some sort of evidence you've read the next three links, I'll delete it and have you banned.
