Subject: Blinking "?" on mac classic |
Comment: Hi, I was given an old mac classic but it wont boot. I get the happy mac face then the disk icon with a blinking "?". I've been able to boot it up with a Norton emergency disc and I used that to repair the harddrive. I can also boot with a Norton disk editor disk and I can see the HD and everything on it but still get the ?. My question is , is there a way to reformat the drive and reinstall 7.5.3 from inside Norton or do I need to make a 7.5.3 boot floppy with hard drive set up. If so, how do I go about it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million. Chris

Reply: (edit)You didn't mention if you selected the hard drive as the startup disk in the startup disk control panel when you booted from Norton. Sometimes that's all it is. You said you can see the hard drive - you can also doublecheck that the System Folder is "blessed" (a mini-icon of a mac appears on it in icon view). Here's a great website for old macs you might check out: http://lightning.prohosting.com/~

Reply: (edit)Hi. I'm not sure but I think that the blinking "?" means that your Mac can't find a startup disk. If you can still bootup with a Norton Disk, you should be OK. By that I mean I wouldn't think that there was major damage to your harddisk. You might want to startup with your system disk and, if you can still see the harddisk icon, backup all the files that you want to keep and just reinstall the system. Then reboot and your right back in the game. I hope I was able to help you a bit. Good Luck. <^-^>
