I have this problem with my iMac. I can't turn it off, cause if I do, then when I try to turn it on, the screen won't turn on. So I leave iMac on sleep all the time instead of turning it off. But today I had to turn it off, and it now won't turn the screen on. Usually if I let it warm up for maybe 5 hours and restart 100 times it will turn on (but it has some weird colors sometimes). Anyway, I don't want to pay to get this fixed, at least not very much. I just took the iMac apart to fix the CD ROM drive (it wasn't ejecting right), and I didn't see how to get at the monitor, but I suppose I could have figured that out. I wouldn't know what to do once I do get to the monitor though. I read something on previous posts about the analog board having a cold solder joint that needed to be repaired. I've done that sort of thing before (on cordless phones), so maybe I could do it, if I knew where to look, and what needs to be done (just re-solder a joint?)
Re: the CD ROM drive that I took apart: it seems to work a bit better since I glued the rollers to the rod they were on, but it's still not like it was when I got it. Looking at it operating, it seems odd that it could work at all, as the rollers can't do anything once the empty center of the CD gets to them (the rollers are only fat enough to catch the CD in its center!). Anyway, if anyone else has fixed this problem before, I'd love to know what the procedure is!

Oh, I forgot to say that my CD ROM drive is, of course, slot-loading (those tray-loading drives don't look as nice, but they sure do seem to last longer).

Yeah... same here. Usually I can put my iMac to
sleep and it works fine, but I just installed Jaguar,
and it was running fine...Then, something froze and I restarted the
computer with the restart button on the side. It
turned the moniter on when it started up, but the
display was like curved all to the right sorta in the
shape of a " ) " and the screen was a dark purple
tint. Sometimes that had happened before, but I
would restart it and it would be ok. This time, I
restarted about 25-30 times, and it didn't change
(still distorted.)I reset the PRAM using Option+Apple+P+R while
it started up. Now, the display won't even turn on.
It makes a sound like it is starting up and another
sound like the screen is gonna turn on, but it
never does. It just stays black. If I let it start up all
the way even though the screen is not on, then
put it to sleep, it wakes up and it is VERY dark
purple and it has nothing to do with my contrast/
brightness settings...Please help me, I am working on a website wit my
friend, and I need my computer workin as soon as
posible.Thanks guys!

Well, count me in, too. This happened a month
ago but I got things going again. Today I shut
down and then restarted a few minutes later and
got the aforementioned purple tint. After several
restarts now I get a black screen. This is
apparently not an isolated issue. Let's pray there
is a fix.

Had same problem. Started up from
Apple hardware test disk & got just
enough brightness to get to Apple site
and download latest Firmware (By any
chance are you using an iMac Dv from
round about late 199 early 2000? - lots of
letters in Apple Support's discussions!
