The WHOLE DRIVE? Operating system and all? You would have to boot from an external source in order to copy the current operating system. You may want to look into backup software which will backup your DATA to an external drive or network destination. Data is what you should worry about. O/S & apps can be re-installed easily....Data is another story.

Norton makes a program called GHOST which is great for moving ALL your data from one drive to another, used mainly when you buy/build a new PC and need to move all your old stuff to the new one. I THINK a Mac version is available and I'm sure you could make it move all the data to a CD or into a CD ISO image. There has to be a way.
Else, look into something similar to Drive Image from Powerquest. That IS a Windows program, but there has to be some kind of similar program available for Mac.
One other idea; I recently installed Virtual PC from Connectix. During the install, it advertised other software that it makes. One of these is a backup agent. And Connectix does make a fair bit of useful Mac programs. Check their website at www.connectix.com
