Quicktime's been able to play them since
way back in version 3x (or maybe it was
4x)..
if you cant then there might be some
other thing wrong..i'm not sure, you might
need the intel indeo extensions versions
3, 4, and 5...theyr'e on apple's site at any

You can also try a different media player. DIVX.com has a free version that is supposed to be able to play ANY .avi video. I have yet to encounter a problem with it on my Mac.

VLC, video lan client, works great for avi and some other
movie types that quicktime won't handle. Will play mpeg2
files as well if you don't have the quicktime plugin. It is
free and works well on most any platform. Just do a
search for "video lan client download"

I tried to play it in QuickTime but it still
can't. The AVI movies has a MP42 codec. I
don't know why quicktime doesn't support
that?

quicktime does not normally come with the codecs for avi.
You need to download some divx codecs... last I heard the
mac version was called 3ivx, but there might be
something more performing now... oh and you'll probably
need to download a whole load of other sharewares with it
but divx.com should tell you what to do
