Quicktime's been able to play them since way back in version 3x (or maybe it was 4x).. if you cant then there might be some other thing wrong..i'm not sure, you might need the intel indeo extensions versions 3, 4, and 5...theyr'e on apple's site at any rate.....
You can also try a different media player. DIVX.com has a free version that is supposed to be able to play ANY .avi video. I have yet to encounter a problem with it on my Mac.
VLC, video lan client, works great for avi and some other movie types that quicktime won't handle. Will play mpeg2 files as well if you don't have the quicktime plugin. It is free and works well on most any platform. Just do a search for "video lan client download"
quicktime does not normally come with the codecs for avi. You need to download some divx codecs... last I heard the mac version was called 3ivx, but there might be something more performing now... oh and you'll probably need to download a whole load of other sharewares with it but divx.com should tell you what to do
