anyone know of a program (preferably free) which can convert asf to mp3. I've found plenty for windows but I can't even find one to pay for that will run on OS x. thanks for the help

I have only found one. If you go to www.versiontracker.com and search for asf to mp3 a product titled EasyWMA is the only search result. They say that the full version costs $10 but I'm not sure how functional it is without paying. I wish I could be of more help but I hope this works for you.
