A couple weeks ago I got a Mac OS X Laptop and since my ISP is AOL immediately installed it to get online but to my surprise it doesn't work with AOL Broadband Cable; which I use on my PC. So does anyone know ways around the AOL program that can get me to log into the whole broadband thing. I've tried Googleing to see if there were any answers and it gave me this link http://www.computing.net/mac/wwwboard/forum/9929.html, but sadly this about DSL and the UK. To avoid the obvious answer no I can't switch from AOL. Oh yes I do have AOL for OS X installed.

I purchased AOL broadband in Dec 2003 and went online with my PC’s via a NETGEAR router with no problems. I was told at that time by AOL that broadband on the MAC was only supported under OSX.

I managed to upgrade my beige G3 to OSX Panther 10.3 by July 2004 via XposFacto, to be further advised by AOL that their online version would also be required.

After several more hours of downloading AOL’s broadband version via a dialtone connection, I contacted AOL a final time, to be informed by them that they will not support broadband at all on the MAC.

Is there a technical issue between AOL and APPLE, a Microsoft-AOL conspiracy afoot, or a legitimate reason why this connection cannot be accomplished.?

In the UK, AOl state that their broadband does not work
with the Mac, however, I am on AOL Broadband, 1Meg,
and mine works flawlessly via a router - no AOL software
required.

Hi Kyomii

Thanks for your responsethat was originally for EVIL VIN, but how about a little detail on how you accomplished your MAC connection to AOL without there software. My MAC won’t talk thru the cable modem to any ome or thing. RUSTY7270@aol.com

Hi Rusty,

Not sure where you are based (UK or US?), but here is how
I did it. (Incedentally, you don't need the software
anymore in the UK if you are on braodband).

I plugged the ethernet cable from the router directly into
the Mac, booted up, then I had to disable the onboard
modem (this is a must) by unticking the box under
network port configurations.

I then rebooted the system, chose built-in-ethernet
(system preferences, network), and rebooted. I then
booted back up and connected immediately.

Bear in mind, all settings are alread saved in the router,
which has to be set up to work with AOL. DHCP etc are as
standard, so no other settings on the Mac needed
changing.

I am not sure if you are on cable and in a different country
how the connection may need setting up via the network
options in system preferences. I hope this helps.

Disabling the inbuilt modem was essential for me to get a
connection because the Mac kept detecting this modem
instead of the broadband connection, so maybe try that
first.

Regards,
Kyomii

Hi Kyomii,

I have a PC runing on AOL broadband but also need to connect my Mac for work. I have a Voyager 105 modem. I tried looking for a driver for my Mac to support the modem but could only find one for the Voyager 100 (I dont know if it matters?) Anyway I changed a few settings in Internet connect and attached the modem to the usb port but cant get it to work.

Do you have any ideas?

Maybe I have the settings wrong, I dont know. Or maybe I should use an Ethernet cable from my PC to my Mac.... how do I do that?

Very gratefull for any help offered.

Thanks, Mark

Hi Kyomii
I connected to AOL through a Belkin wireless
router on my ibook it worked fine for a day
no problem at all then the next day it all
went wrong. After entering my password it
went through the log in process but I could
not get into the AOL site. I am however
able to use internet explorer so the
wireless connection must be working, do you
have any ideas why AOL should suddenly stop
working.
