Alternative OS for PPC 601
Name: DRVR Date: April 25, 2003 at 09:41:54 Pacific OS: Mac OS 7.6 (modified) CPU/Ram: PM 7200/96MB
Comment:
I have a PM7200 w/ PPC 601@ 90Mhz. I have 96 MB of Ram. I was wondering if there is any alternative OS that will run on it. I know that there are versions of Linux out there, but I can't seem to find a well developed one that has a good GUI. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Linux with a well-developed GUI? You're a funny man :)
If by "well-developed" you mean "anywhere near as refined as the Mac OS" then what you're looking for doesn't exist. KDE is getting close, but the graphics performance on those older PPCs is absolute poo anyway, so it's probably not worth it to expect a whole lot out of it.

You might be able to find a copy of BeOS somewhere out there, those ran on PPC Macs.

Yeah, Be is great.

Its application support is poor at best, and more like "nonexistent."
