Hey,
I'm looking for alternative OSs to experiment with on my 68LC040-based Mac (LC580). I've been able to find 68k capable ones in the past but they require the FRU which my LC-variant chip doesn't have.
Any ideas?
I could have sworn I'd read something about CP/M-86 but the 68k isn't x86 compatible so it makes no sense. Thanks

I'm sure you mean "FPU" as in FloatingPointUnit. And yes your LC580 came with a 68lc040, you need to first go on ebay and find a regular 68040 at 33Mhz and swap out the CPU before you can load any alternative OS's.

and alternative OS's, look under "680x0"

Oops...yes, FPU...been dealing with a lot of IBM items lately. I'd like to say it was a simple typo but it was actually my brain on the completely wrong track.
I figured I'd need an actual 68040 to be able to do anything. Will the logic board (as Apple calls it) support that chip, or is it specifically tied down to using only the LC version?
Thanks for the link.

You can install a regular 68040 in any 68lc040 macintosh with a socketed CPU. Pretty much all of them.
