I have the original 30 Gb hard drive, plus a 40Gb
ATA drive. I want to add a third 120Gb ATA drive.
Is this possible with or without an extra ATA card.
If a card is needed what is recommended?

Depends on what Mac you have. The newest
ones, you can have 4 drives. If it's an older one,
you'll need an ATA card. Sonnet has a good card.

Since the 466 implies a G4, and most G4s came with Zip drives, you may have some problems, since you also have an optical drive, and that's four devices already.

You'll need to add an ATA card unless you don't have a Zip, in which case it should be able to connect on the same bus that the optical drive is on.

Just get the ATA card to avoid bottlenecks and data integrity issues. Believe me, the extra $$ is worth it.

Also, consider how many devices your power supply can support... ???

The G4s can support at *least* four internal HDs plus the normal optical drive and Zip.

And where would you plug all these devices? When I look at my G4, it only has two IDE ports. And, since IDE only supports two devices per ribbon, and the ZIP and CD are both IDE, where do the other 4 drives hook up?

And further, how do you deal with the inherent asynchronous problems with IDE? You can only read OR write from one of the devices at a time. This can really kill performance and can inhibit CD burning as well.

You didn't say whether adding an IDE card was allowed. There's room to install four drives besides the optical and Zip. Hooking them up is another matter, but the PSU will drive them just fine, which was the issue in the first place.

Stop trying to change the subject.
