Hi!

I collected a few more or less difficult questions again (ibook700):

1. I can't get q3 running. I downloaded the file Quake3-132.pkg.sit from macupdate.com. When I start the executable then a message box shows me something usefull like q3 can't start or so. The crash.log is not helpfull as well.
I am able to play RoCW-demo, which has as far as I know the same graphic-engine. What can I do?

2. I'd like to make a dvd-screenshot, but the apple dvd-player does not allow it. Is there a (simple and free) tool which provides such things?

3. Unforunately the aqua-GUI tends to crash from time to time. More than my PII266-Linuxbox with Windowmaker for example. Is there a way to restart the GUI (like ctrl|alt|backspace in X-Windows)? Is it possible to connect via ssh and kill the aqua-prozess-ID?
What are your experiences concerning stability?

4. I got a video-out connector to watch movies on my TV-set. But I want to play games as well. The problem is that every game I tested so far switches from PAL to NTSC. Then I can't access my monitor configuration (because of the fullscreen-mode). I have to quit the game, set to PAL again. But that doesn't help because RfCW for example always sets the TV back to NTSC. NTSC seems to be a default mode which is always used when a TV is connected and the video mode changes. Makes sense if you live in the US, but not in a PAL-area.
Any ideas?

Thanx for help & hints!

Greetings,

h.

1) I'm pretty sure you need the retail version of Quake 3, not just the updater...

2) Use VLC or similar. Search for "DVD player" at macupdate.com.

3) I haven't had a GUI crash since, oh, maybe July 2002, so I'm afraid I can't be of much assistance there.

4) Not sure, but try the KBase.

1. Mhm, and why is it marked as demo with requirements=OSX? However for the moment I'm happy with RoCW.
2. Yeah, vlc is quit cool, but playing a vob-file is kinky slow...
3. I'll try to find a situation which causes a reproducable crash.
4. Nothing. Even my favorite KBase Google found not too much. Seems to be a big deal or a problem with my S-video/SCART-adapter.

However, thanks for helping me.
Cheers,

h.

Only Question No.2
Step 1: play your DVD
step 2: turn on any other application.
step 3: put the window of such app away
from the image you want to screenshoot.
step 4: screenshot
step 4: there u are.

Marco, that's a really cool workaround. I'll have to keep that one in the memory banks.

About the video issue: try posting a note on the Apple discussion boards, too. Sometimes the KBase search engine can be a bit difficult, and there are offical Apple folks there who can walk you through official Apple remedies and such ;)

Hi,

That apple-DVD-player allows me almost nothing. Only fullscreen and thus I can't start or controll another app.
But I tried vlc again and the DVD runs proper with play volume (instead of the vob-file); even with 5 other windows open...
Solely finding a single picture is hard work.

I found that you can kill applications with option|ctrl|esc. Even the finder itself to "restart" the aqua-GUI.

All right I'll peeve the appleguys.

h.

Oh yeah - I spoke with a friend who works for the Apple Store as a Mac Genius and he thinks (and I agree) that the problem is due to poor programming of the games, not anything to do with the iBook or the OS.
