Hi, I'd like to use an HP Laserjet 5000 with a 68k mac over an ethernet, but I can't find a driver for it from HP. I'm running Mac OS 8.1, and I downloaded the HP driver from their site for Mac OS 8 & 9, but when I went to run the installer, it said: 'The application program "hp Laserjet Installer" could not be opened, because it might be damaged or not work on this type of computer.', which makes me think it's only for PPC. Does anyone know how I can get an HP Laserjet driver for a 68k mac? (Also, I already tried using Chuck's Driver and couldn't get it to work.)
Go to:

vers/main.htmllook to the bottom of the page to mac
printer descriptions. Find hewlett/packard.
Or try this shortcut:http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/pri

Just use the LaserWriter 8 driver, and
make sure you have a PPD file for the
5000-series from HP. The PPDs are
68K- and PPC-compatible, so you can
just grab one of those no matter what. The HP drivers suck, so trust me on this
one - just use the Apple LaserWriter 8
drivers and you'll be quite all right.p
Yeah, I have the laserjet 5000 series at home for the past 3 years. It's fantastic, max paper 11"x17", you should never ever get rid of it. It's worth alot of $$$$$. The catridges are very expensive though ($375.00)
To answer your question, always get the newest OS which is 9.2.2 or OSX. Once you do, it will have all the PPD's installed. I connected the HP5000 on a hub via ethernet, and it works like a charm. Update your system to 9.2.2.
Care to explain what good updating to 9.2.2 (or attempting it) will do on a 68K Mac, jperro? p
Hey, thanks for the info, but I have another question. I got the HP LaserJet 5000 PPD file, but my mac does not recognize the printer over the network. I'm not sure if I should set the printer up using AppleTalk or LPR. Is AppleTalk a protocol specific to Apple, because the network I'm using is Windows-based. Should I go with LPR and print to the TCP/IP port? I think I'm confused between AppleTalk and LPR. Please help.
Yep, use LPR. It'll be less of a hassle in
your case. Just make sure you know the
IP addy of the printer, or it'll be really
difficult to set up :)p
