I posted this earlier on the general hardware forum, unaware that there was a mac specific one. Here's the copy and paste:
Hello,
I am trying to connect my 5.1 system to my ibook. Since it only has a headphone jack in the way of sound outputs I looked into usb soundcards. The trouble is there are millions of them, I just found out about them yesterday and I'm not at all fluent in sound jargon, leaving me a very confused young man.
The speakers are from my desktop pc on which I ended up using headphones exclusively. They are Creative Live 5.1 5500 (which only have those green/orange/black connectors). The iBook has firewire and USB 2.0, no S/PDIF or any other such niceties.
What I'm looking for is something cost-effective in the <50 range, with vanilla 5.1 functionality and easy connect/disconnect since it's for my laptop.
Your help would be much appreciated, even a pointer in the right direction would be good.
Thanks
Demosthenes

This is made for the ibook, you can connect speakers to it
too, although I am not sure about 5.1 speakers. They sell it
at Amazon and at the UK Apple store too:http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic2/
