Hi,
as a mac user since 13 years, I've had a
lot of very strange tricks to fight with, but
this problem it's really amazing......
my problem is:
I've 3 Macs (iMac500, iMacG4flat,
iBook500) running MacOs9.2.1, 9.2.2,
9.2.2 connectded in a local network
trough an ADSL router/switch. They can
access Internet and they can share each
other by AppleShare but....
2 Mac of three are extremely slow at
startup, probably because they have the
option "mount at startup" for their volumes
in the appleShare panel in the chooser
application, so probably when they boot ,
they search one for the other and takes 4
or 5 minutes to startup. If I disconnect the
macs from the network everything goes
OK and they sturtup quickly. I do not use
DHCP for the router, the macs have their
local IP.
The REAL problem is that I cannot
UNCHECK the option "mount at startup"
in this 2 Macs (only in this 2) because
every times that I uncheck the option, it is
automatically RECHECKED wen I try to
reconnect to one of the 2 macs!!!!
I tried to trash all the apple share,
chooser, file sharing preferences and
reebooted but NOTHING!
The very STRANGE THINGS is that this
misterious trick do not happen on the 3rd
Mac (the ibook), with this I can check and
uncheck the option "mount at startup" as
many times I want!!!!!
I've not yet tried to delete the
APPLESHAREPDS hidden file and to zap
the PRAM (because I'm far from the office
in these days).
Suppose that I resolve this problem; How
can I avoid the long waiting time at startup
if I want the 2 macs to mount their drives
throug file sharing????!!!
I'm going CRAZY!!!!!!

In order to uncheck the "mount at startup", the
share points of the computer you logged into and
set for "mount at startup" must be exactly as they
were when you selected "mount at startup". You
must log in as the same user as well.

This can be difficult to recreate, under many
circumstances.

In order to fix the problem I have trashed the
whole Preferences Folder on a computer with this
problem and it didn't fix it. I reinstalled several
Extensions as well, and the same problem
persisted. I've removed the System Files and
performed a restore in place with the same
problem.

To fix this problem, I have had to perform a clean
install of the OS.

Or, instead of REINSTALLING, you could go to System Folder:Servers and delete the disk aliases. This will uncheck the "mount at startup" box, and should make things run more quickly.

I can't believe I've never come across this. Pre
Mac OS 8.6, it was stored in the AppleShare Prep
file. With 8.6 and newer it's stored as aliases in
the Servers Folder. Well, that'll save me a lot of
time in the future. Thanks Kerry!

Deleting that AppleShare PDS file will fix it too.
