hey there, i've got a bit of a problem..
my ibook doesn't enjoy loading, there are two cases:
1) all i get is the smiling mac, nothing else
2) when i boot from the cd, the OS appears to load however, all i get is the cdboot background and the time. An interesting point is that i tried ( just for the sake of trying something! ) a force quit, and i got the box but no text. another interesting thing is that i don't get the start-up bong - important as it is ;)any ideas?
-thanks

Did u zap the PRAM? Do this by restarting your machine, and imdiately press apple+option+p+r. Hold these in until your machine restarts again, then release.
What are the specs from your machine?

Zapping p-ram: Hold till you hear the
restart/chimes FOUR or FIVE times, not
just once. I mean, one will do most likely
but I have always heard advice to hold for
FOUR. Can't hurt.

Four probably won't do anything that one wouldn't have done, but FWIW, TechTool is a far better solution than cmd-opt-P-R. Unfortunately, it doesn't work unless you can boot the Mac.
p

thanks for the advice, though apart from getting the chime, there was no other affect to my starup process.
firmware tells me that the machine is an Apple PowerBook 2, 1 1.3f1
the start-up disk that i have is for mac os 9.0.4, i have tried using a different start-up disk but again no affect.
do you have any more advice for me?thanks

What iBook is it? Are you sure 9.0.4 is recent enough to boot it (i.e., is that what came with it?)?
p

Well, I have never seen this ibook working...
i've been working on this for a friend, so i'm not sure what version of ibook it is, except to say that the case tells me that it was manufactured in 1999. As to what version of OS it should use, well I have no idea..
OS 9.04 was released around 2000, so i do see your point about whether the OS is valid.
The ibook was bought 2nd hand in America and i am not sure of it's history or stats other than what i've mentioned so far.drew

There are a number of things that could be wrong.
1) Bad RAM. Difficult to suspect this without knowing whether or not any third-party RAM has been installed, and if so, what brand and size.
2) You mentioned you bought it in the US as though the US is a foreign country to you, which leads me to believe it's been on a long trip. Something might have worked loose in shipping/transport.
3) You've never seen it working. Did the person who sold it to your friend ever see it working?
4) 9.0.4 ought to be sufficient to boot an original Blueberry iBook, but just to clarify something, is this a 9.0.4 retail CD, or was it the CD that came with another Mac?
5) What was the other boot disk you mentioned trying that also didn't work?p

kewlies, good points
- there has been xtra RAM installed (how much, brand i'm not sure)
- the CD is an ibook edition (although a copy);(
- the other boot was for an imac, v9.02 from memory
- aparently the ibook did work, it just stopped one day.. (?)i'm waiting for the security allen-key to come my way so that i can crack the ibook open (next day or so). I think that the simptoms are pointing towards the RAM, or the bus between it and other devices.
An interesting note is that the extensions load when it boots from the CD, which kinda says that the HD is ok.
Though the question is, if it is the RAM, why are there two different cases? one case, nothing happens, the other - it boots though not completely..hmm well, i'll let you know when i crack it open, probably there is something loose.
Drew

First thing I'd do is pull the third-party RAM and then re-check it.
Extensions that load when it boots from the CD are the extensions on the CD. They have nothing to do with the hard disk.
How did it get transported to wherever you are? A loose connection is quite possible if it was shipped in a poorly-packed container. If it was carried on in a carry-on bag, however, that's a lot less likely.

hey there, sorry that i've taken a a little
while to reply.. i checked out the ram
that's currently in the machine:
128Mb SDRAM
it's produced by Nanya.
i'm not sure of it's speed or what-not.this problem has me beat.. it's like the
ibook can't load a file structure, either
from it's own HD or other devices..
macOs loads, but not the full interface, yet
there are no errors reported. iF the prob
was memory, you'd think that i'd at least
get some message saying so...heck, this is killing me
