m.sanders wrote in an earlier message,

This disk saved me lots of frustration, time and money. It boots and runs Linus with or without a hard disk. Automatically finds and uses most peripherals - USB, Sound, NIC, etc.

2 GB of software on one bootable CDROM.
Download the ISO and burn it yourself.
You won't believe it until you see it!!

Since it can also read/write FAT and NTFS, it is a great way to repair a broken Windows or Linux installation. Amazing stuff!!!

After you try it, please post your comments.

WOW!!! That sums it up!

I just downloaded, burned the bootable cd iso with nero, rebooted and it detected and installed my video, nic, sound, usb, all partitions and put links to them on the desktop. It created a ram drive and moved necessary files their. Oh yeah I was booted into a KDE 3 desktop and am currently posting this with Mozilla off a bootable linux CD!!! I love Linux!!

This thing is loaded with apps. I just booted it so I don't really know what else it can/can't do, but I don't even care. The disc more than serves it's purpose as a portable O/S for troubleshooting that you can actually do things with in a moments notice or when there is no access to a damaged O/S. I think it only took like 4 min tops to get up and running.

And it's pretty fast! Compared to the Winternals ERD Commander 2002, this kills it, and it's free. The only benefit to the ERD is the NTFS and minor registry editing and service controls.

This product is a winner and a shining example of the power and flexibility of Linux.

You won't be dissapointed. See for yourself! If you're still thinking..yeah..yeah..then snap out of it and download it! I have never seen anything like this!!!

Mo,

I'm not the author, nor do I even know the dude's name, but when I see a product so amazing, I have to recommend it to others that may truly benefit from something that is free and helpful. This could be really useful to a tech's toolkit.

Are you a tool? You must be like 12yrs old or 55 and know absolutely mothing about anything.

I know that I may have went off on a rant, but for someone who deals with IT, this becomes an invaluable tool.

It doesn't really matter what you think because you obviously don't know any better.

Why are you even here if you have nothing constructive to contribute. This is supposed to be a serious discussion forum not a crib for babies to cry in.

Verbal,

Thanks for being normal...sheesh! How did all these anti-linux twits end up in this forum?? There are like 6 Windows ones!

Anyways, I never wrote it, I don't know how to program. I'm a techie.

The CD doesn't need a hard drive to run. As with all linux, don't WRITE to NTFS - could cause corruption.

I just showed it to my co-workers and they loved it.

I can understand mo's comments as a joke, but enigmaaaa is in his/her own world. Come back to earth.

Hi Tero, "Newb" here-

Thanks for the heads up on this. It was written up a few months ago at extremetech.com discussions but I had forgotten about it. I'm going to burn it & have a look-see today.

BTW- I just did a partition/format of my 100GB drive in order to load Win98SE & W2K Pro (8 parts. total w/98 & 2K on the first two). The rest will be used for eveything else to keep the mess to a min. I then was going to hook up another 13GB drive to try & house Mandrake 8.2 & Lycoris.... any tips on the best way to go about this? I'm brand new to Linux so go slooooww ;)

Knoppix can read NTFS - even compressed NTFS - but I didn't try writing to an NTFS disk yet. After reading your comment, I'm glad i didn't.

Do you have any pointers to explain the basis for this problem??

BTW - Thanks for the info. Knoppix is really fantastic! I feel like I already got my Christams present for this year.

Re: Tracy

I may not be the best person to advise on your question as I haven't done more than dual boot 2K or 98 with Linux. Basically the Mandrake CUSTOM install will present you with your partitions. Install to a fresh parition and to avoid any MBR hiccups, use a boot disk to boot into Linux. If you do a search on this forum you should find a lot of good info from experts on the best ways to do this. The dual boot questions are quite frequent.

Re: Q-Dot
I don't know the technical reasons, but I'm assuming that Microsoft won't help out with compatibility with NTFS for other O/Ss.

I'm glad my recommendation wasn't a complete waste of time.

Hey you all-

What source/mirror did you use to get this? I'm having a devil of a time hooking up (& I'm on broadband). Does it matter HTTP or FTP?

Thanks!

RE: Tero

I'll check out multiboot here some more- I've been playing with 2000- learning some ins & outs. One other thing I'd like to do is "Ghost" my two MS systems as they stand - clean & w/o any programs, junk, etc... so I'd be able to reinstall if I hose the whole deal during Linux. Any ideas on that? Have you used Ghost? I have the 2002 version.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH Tero.

Down loaded it last night from one of the
http mirror sites. Too bad I couldn't get
the it.ca site to work. DL'd at between
36k-65k, took almost 4 hours but WELL worth
it.

Removed my hard drives and booted the CD.
It didn't find my 3C509 card, but even with
my limited Linux knowledge it took less
than 1/2 hour to get up on the Internet.
Loaded the 3C509 driver via the
KNOPPIX-Network/Internet-ADSL/PPPOE
configuration. Used the Network card
configuration to make sure I was DHCPing
from my ISP (though that may not habe been
necessary). I'm responding via Konqueror
now!

It did find my NetGear FA311 card, just not
sure what it has done with it, yet. It also
elected to use the on board ATI Rage AGP
rather than my GeForce2 MX400 PCI card. I'm
sure that's because of the poor BIOS on
this POS e-machine (yes, boot PCI video is
enabled). On board sound came up no problem
too. All this on a K-6-2 450 with 128MB of
RAM. TOO COOL!

But what are the poor hackers and script
kiddies going to do now when a simple
Reboot will absolutely wipe whatever they
can do?

THANKS again - even if I am closer to the
latter you mentioned in response 5.

michael: My download took 4 times yours.
Have DSL but could not get any speed from
anywhere close by. Went to Australia at
10-12kbs 18 hours to download.

Just tried booting it once. Seems pretty
nice found everything except WinModem.
Netword card, CD, and rest of stuff all in.

Only 1 slight problem - scandisk on reboot
into Win 98.

Hey guys and girls,

I tried it and I'm impressed. It seems to be a serious approach, loaded with features,.

For my opinion it looks alittle bit too crowded on the desktop, but that is just a personal impression.

In the future I will not advise to get a "linux on a floppy", I'd offer to get Knoppix or a Linus on a floppy to fix a problem

I was busy tweeking Win2K when a colleague lent me this disk called Knoppix. I tried it on my Athlon 1400 - good grief!!! Its a crime that a OS can do this... free! Ever since, I have started migrating to Linux OS. I love it!

Tero is THE MAN!!! As of today, I've spent
about 1 1/2 days attempting to get X in Red
Hat 7.2 to recognize my USB ports and my
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420 adapter. I didn't
even come close. Just as I was about to
pull out my hair, I came across this
thread, went to the Knoppix site, waited
for about 50 min. for the download (~170
kbps), burned the ISO to CD-R via Nero and
POW...Here I am posting a reply via
Konquerer with all of my hardware
configured. Thanks Tero!!! Naysayers be
damned...
