Just a suggestion, why not use Gaim? It will work with Yahoo and like 5 other instant messengers including IRC. Just a thought.

FYI gaim supports:
AIM/ICQ
Gadu-Gadu
Groupwise
IRC
Jabber
MSN
Napster
Yahoo
Zephyr

Kopete supports pretty much the same. I have no prolems connecting to Yahoo with Gaim. Are you going through a firewall? Are you using a proxy server?

"...no firewall no proxy server. Just plain LAN connection only..."
So you must be going out through some sort of gateway/firewall. How are you connected to the net? Can you browse the internet OK? How about FTP etc? Can you telnet OK to scs.msg.yahoo.com port 5050? You may have a firewall enabled in Mandiva, what is the output of "/usr/sbin/iptables -L"? How about the output of "/sbin/route"? It should show your default gateway....

From the command line:
$ telnet scs.msg.yahoo.com 5050

If there is something blocking the way you will get a response like:
Trying 216.155.193.178...
Trying 216.155.193.179...
Trying 216.155.193.180...
Trying 216.155.193.174...
Trying 216.155.193.175...
Trying 216.155.193.176...
Trying 216.155.193.177...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

If successful the output is:
Trying 216.155.193.177...
Connected to scs.msg.yahoo.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

It does sound like you might need to open up ports on your gw/router....

1) Your local firewall is open, everything is being accepted so this is not the problem.

2) Your default gateway is 10.11.74.1, what IP are you using for the computer? Are you using the correct subnet? The output if "/sbin/ifconfig" will help.

3) You don't have telnet installed!

How are you setting up your network IP address etc on the computer? Is it done via DHCP or is it static?

I still do belive that somewhere between you and the internet is a router/firewall which just needs the correct ports opened? What sort of network is this? School, home, work? You may need to speak to the sys admin. How are you connecting to the internet? Dial-up, ISDN, ADSL etc?

Do you live in India? Sounds like you are connecting through Satyam/Sify. Aparently they use a firewall at your operator's end (see http://www.desitorrents.com/forums/showthread.php?s=102e15f393f893c16fea1aa22773e437&p=222037#post222037). You need to call and ask them to open up yahoo messenger ports. Here's a link with some useful info:
http://search1.cc.dcn.yahoo.com/cct_search.php?ui_mode=answer&prior_transaction_id=124317&action_code=5&highlight_info=16787856,10,19&turl=http%3A%2F%2Fhelp.yahoo.com%2Fhelp%2Fus%2Fmessenger%2Fwin%2Fsignin%2Fsignin-02.html&answer_id=7092656#__highlight

Regarding the seg fault....just try a different program, you should have gaim or kopete already installed. If not you should find an RPM on one of the mandrake installation CDs. You can install it with:
# rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/path/to/packagename.rpm

Hi Dave
I went thru the above sites the first one (desitorrents) doesnt show up anything. the second site gives me some details but as i am a novice as far as LINUX is concerned I am at a loss to c how to use them for my purpose. I have GAIM and Kapote installed in my machine both of them try to connect to Yahoo but no avail.
Yes you are right I live in India and connect thru SIFY Broadband connection. Why should i ask them to open up the ports when it is already opened and working in WINDOWS. there is absoloutely no pblm in windows. I personally feel this is something system configuration specific problem the i need to address, ofcourse with your valuable help. Please throw some light further.
Thanks Dave

Start up gaim, got to Help > Debug Window and then try to connect. It may provide some clues....

What is the output of "traceroute scs.msg.yahoo.com"?

slighthly off topic, but if you want most of the features of yahoo messenger in Linux, try gyach(http://www4.infi.net/~cpinkham/gyach). You can use your webcam with gyach unlike the the RPMS provided by yahoo.
