Hi linux people,
I have ati agp video card with an old machine that I am trying to install debian on it "because it is good for updating". the problem is that the xserver faild. how can I resolve the problem? thanks in advance
J

What exactly do you mean by fail? Did you at
least try to run "xf86config" at the prompt to
configure X for your system?taurus

Post up the last few lines of output after
you do a "startx" and it fails. It should
give you the reason why....

here is the whole thing:
warning: process set to nice value 0 instead of -10 as requestedXFree86 Version 3.3.6a / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300)
Release Date: xx November 2000
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer
than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting
problems. (see http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)
Operating System: Linux 2.4.13 i686 [ELF]
Configured drivers:
Mach8: accelerated server for ATI Mach-8 graphics adaptors (Patchlevel 1)
(using VT number 7)XF86Config: /etc/X11/XF86Config
(**) stands for supplied, (--) stands for probed/default values
(--) no ModulePath specified using default: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules
dbe: Unknown error loading moduleConfig Error: /etc/X11/XF86Config:48
SubSection "extmod"
^^^^^^^^^^^
Module section keyword expected
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

It looks like a problem with line 48 of
/etc/X11/XF86Config(-4)
Try commenting out Load "dbe" from
your /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4) file by
putting a "#" in front of the line, eg:
Section "Module"
#Load "dbe"
You may need to comment out the whole
SubSection "extmod" too.
I'm not 100% sure, perhaps you should post
up your /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4) too.
