xscreensaver not working under root.

for some reason, xscreensaver does not work if i login as root, but for other users it does. any suggestions? so far i've type setterm - powersave off -blank 0
and unchecked 'amd' and 'ampd' in ntsysv options.

any help will be greatly appreciated,
