XP(NTFS) Moving to Linux

I currently trying to move over to linux using mandrake 8.2 but i get this error when it try's to load. VFS Can not open root device
Please append root= option
Kernal Panic, VFS unable to boot root

At your lilo prompt, try typing:
#linux root=/dev/hdXX
where XX is your root partition (eg /dev/hda1)
