i had this problem , i install xmms and got no sound. althought my audio setup was correct. i could play music with different players. so i came round to think it was down to xmms it self. and it was
to fix the problem. try using the options and change the input plugin. css oss. or something. play around with them. see which one gives sound. sure worked for me
