Hello,every one!
I can telnet on the Readhat 8 machine as fllows: telnet (mycomputer name or ip address) port, but i can't do this from another machine under windows. The most surprising thing is i can telnet the ftp port(21).All the "disble" options in the related files under /etc/xinet.d/ have been set to "no". why?

Sorry more info is needed. Why are you looking in Xinetd? TO see if it is running? You say telnet "on" is that from or to? etc etc

Thank your reply. I can telnet to the linux machine on any port for example 23 from the same machine (localhost) but i can't telnet to it from other windows client machine. I refer to xinetd just because i think the services such as telnet, and pop are controlled by this daemon and i can't use these services from other client machines except localhost. However, i can use the ftp service and smtp service, though the latter has nothing to do with xinetd.

Ok. Now I understand a bit more.

Well let me first ask why are you using telnet and not ssh? ssh is a secure login from anywhere because all the data passed back and forth is encrypted. Password and all. I do not use telnet, but rather I use ssh. There is a great and small program for windows called putty.exe. This Allows telent rsh ssh and it is free. go tot google to download. ssh has worked right out of the box for me and I even pass winVNC through it.
As far as telnet goes..do you have a firewall? make sure the port is open to the card connecting your home network. Also, disable = no means that it should be working. if localhost is working then it is most likely a firewall issue. Also, many systems do not allow root to login using telnet, try another user other than a superuser.

Hope soem of this helps...but try ssh. Much safer.

Thanks a lot.I'll try ssh. But my linux machine dosen't have any firewall. Can any other daemons or program controll the telnet access rights?
