Comment:

I am having trouble configuring XFree86 correctly for my monitor. I am using Mandrake 9.0 with XFree86 4.2.1. I have a GeForce 3 Ti200 64MB and my monitor is a Phillips 15C. I don't expect anyone to have the same setup that I do although....you never know!

When I try to run the desktop at 800X600 the screen is way over to the right....by almost 30% of the screen! I've used xvidtune to centre the screen and get the correct settings string but when I enter this into /etc/X11/XF86Config and restart the same problem appears. I have deleted all other entries (apart from the needed stuff) but the same occurs each time.
Can anyone offer any advice?

I managed to work this out eventualy....

Mandrake 9.0 installs 2 versions of XFree86 by default. In the /etc/X11 directory there are config files for both versions.

Since I am running version 4.2.1 I had to enter the correct modeline (obtained from xvidtune) in this file. Before I had been putting it the standard XF86Config file. The correct file is called XF86Config-4.

bbmak - This is exactly what I did to get this o work:

1) Set X Windows to resolution you want to run at.
2) Then run xvidtune from a terminal session.
This will give you a pop up box with lots of buttons eg ^ Keep pressing the one in the direction you want to move your screen and then click on the test button to see if you've moved the screen enough.
3) When the screen looks OK after clicking TEST then click APPLY.
4) Click SHOW This gives an output in the orginial terminal window with the correct refresh rate etc for you Graphics card and monitor combination.
5) Copy the line and paste it into the correct /etc/X11/XF86Config file with the word "modeline" at the start of the line.
Make sure you get the right one as this was my original problem!!!
6) Restart X windows.......

Hopefully this will work!!!
