X on IBM Thinkpad

I have tried aimlessly to get an Xserver to run on my 760el running SuSE 6.3. The laptop has a trident graphics card, and I have tried running the X server with several different values for h-sync and v-sync.
I have successfully got an X server running with 8 bit color and 800*600 resolution. However, although this is usable, the graphics are terrible. I have tried using 16bit color, and the graphics seem to be better, but there are a number of wavy lines across the bottom of the screen, and I can't use the menus there.
I have tried a lot of different XF86Config files that I found on the web, but have had no luck. Any help would be much appreciated.

Suse 6.3 was released Nov 5, 1999. XFree, the software that provides the video drivers was at version 3.3.5 then. It is now at 4.3.0. Driver support for all chips is surely much better than in the ancient version you are trying to get to work, if they were even ever supported in the old version,
My advise to you is upgrade to a more recent distro with, not only, a newer xfree but newer everything.
Your current situation is much like trying to get windows 3.1 to work with todays hardware. You're going to get lots of headaches.
