Hi everybody. I am trying to get my RedHat 8.0 machine to act as an FTP server. I've installed Samba, and created a Samba User. And I have installed wu-ftp, and made sure that 'wu-ftp.conf' says "disable = no". Also checked that both service are running [ ok ].
Here comes my problem:
When I then try to connect from a computer running Win XP, to the RedHat FTP server, by typing 'ftp://red.hat.ip.address' in IE 6.0, I get connected to the FTP server, and I can see the folders bin, etc, lib and pub. And all I have is reading rights. Now shouldn't it be like
1) I get a prompt asking me for a username and password and
2) I end up being in the /home/username folder with read and write rights ?What am I doing wrong, and how does I make it right :-?
(if you were wondering, then yes I am new to Linux, I'm not even sure that Samba has anything to do with wu-ftp, please help me out) :-)

If you are using a web browser to connect to a ftp server, the web browser passes the default username "anonymous" and a bogus password. If you want to pass authentication information the format is
ftp://username:password@ftp.host
P.S. samba allows your linux machine to show up in your neighborhood network as a windows file server. It has nothing to do with ftp.

And a big THANK YOU to you David Perry.
That helped me alot! My server is still not working as I want it too, but now the ball is rolling again. Thanks :)
