I have a wireless USB adaptor that I have been using under windows XP. I have installed Ubuntu 7.10 and want to use the same adaptor. Ubuntu seems to recognize it fine but I can't seem to connect to the wireless netowrk. I put in the same SSID and key and so on that I use in windows but after a minute or so of trying to connect it just says that I need to enter a key or passphrase. Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Try plain to see if it will connect.
Are you sure you are at your router and not a neighbor?

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

I tried with no encryption and it still didn't work. I also noticed that the LED on my router doesn't start flshing when I try yo connect although there is an animation in the toolbar of my computer that seems to indicate that it is doing something. Also the option to connect to a wireless network only appears when I actually plug the adapter in.

I'm pretty sure a neighbours router is not the problem. When I use XP on the same computer my router is the only one that appears on the list.

So my guess is that it recognises it as a wireless device without actually having the proper drivers. I'm new to linux so I'm not sure how to install drivers or even if any exist. It was a cheap adapter (only USB 1.1 and 802.11b) with no brand name anywhere although the manual says:

Core Logic
-----------
Intersil Prism 3
- MAC+BB: ISL3871 (upgrade to 3871A)
- Direct down conversion transceiver: ISL3684
- VCO: ISL3084
- Power Amplifier: ISL 3984

Thanks.

I have tried using ndiswrapper with the driver on the CD, it says the hardware is detected but I am still having no luck connecting. I think I will just buy a new adapter that is known to work with linux. Thanks for the help nonetheless.

Im using Ubuntu 6.10 which is well out of date. When it first came outi had a myriad of problems getting my Belkin54G card to work with the distro. The version of Ndiswrapper was already out of date as well as the respository and i downloaded a current version from soureforge. I then used the native windows drivers, encapsulated them with Ndiswrapper, blacklisted the native Linux driver that boots at start up and hey presto i got my card to work. Do note this took weeks of work..
