I am attempting to implement RH8 as fileserver in my WinXPpro workgroup. If I set security to user in smb.conf and I attempt to click on the Linux machine in network neighborhood, I get presented with logon prompt. When I enter user and pass valid on both XP and RH; it comes back with a second dialog box asking for it again but user is greyed out with xpmachinename\username filled out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers!

Now if I set the security to share, I get a greyed out user prompt when I try to open any shares in the linux machine with the format linuxmachinename\guest in the user field.

New ideas?

Thanks again in advance

Sounds as though it may even be a setting from within windoze that automatically passes on your username to network shares (why else is it greyed out?!?)....dunno, haven't used windoze for a while but I remember something in IE settings that you can switch on to prompt for usernames/passwords. Have a look in your scurity settings and make sure you haven't got IPSEC turned on under XP.

You could always post your smb.conf file too.
