I'm having trouble getting WinModems to install on Linux.
Is there any good driver, utility, or distro for this purpose? Because every damn modem I have is a WinModem of some damn type.

Hi, John
I have the same problems with my SUSE 9.1 installations. If anyone can help him please send me the information to via email to Jecenlightened@aol.com
I have purchased 9 different modems, lately, and I cant get any of them to autodetect in linux some have drivers cd's but they wont function, I have my modems listed under other section in hardware KDE environment. But will not function after every setting is modified from within YAST...

I have US ROBOTICS, CONNECTIVA, some generic modems. Is this a common problem with linux? Also has anyone found a way to install AOL on Linux yet?
Not the messenger parts...
Sincerely,
Joe Christian

Found a lot of drivers for modem, not sure what the deal is though lol. A complete disorganized mess, but may be good if you are able to locate the modem driver from...

Have a look on www.linmodems.org. Better still get yourself an external serial modem, I have yet to find one that doesn't work under GNU/Linux. Just plug it in and away you go.
You can get AOL connectivity with PengAOL:

"external serial modem"
Wow. Haven't even seen one in a while! The last one I got rid of went on an older Mac.

I'm pretty sure you can still get them. You shouldn't have to load any drivers for it, just tell your programs what port it is plugged into. An old ISA card one (the sort with jumpers on to set the port number, IRQ etc) should also work.

Hell, I still see old IBM XTs hanging around. I cleaned out an office about two years ago that was nothing but XTs.
I'm the kind of guy who can't yet bring himself to ditch his old 486s . . .
Which reminds me . . . one of the 486s that was running Win 3.1 had an ISA modem that I can practically guarantee isn't a WinModem!!
Hehehe . . . 28.8k here I come!!!

I never was able to get a winmodem to work with linux myself and bought a US robotics serial modem to connect with in linux.....
Suse.. mandrake... redhat .... all would automatically detect the serial modem...
there was a modem driver for winmodems... in one of the distros that would detect the winmodem but just couldn't get the right config.. for it to connect...
Of course that was before I got DSL.... instead....
If you want the serial modem I have check ...circuit city,,?? maybe that was office max ... or was that comp usa.... Darn forgot....LOL!!!
anyway it was a V92 56k serial modem... If your on dial up and pay even 10 dollars a month... It'd be cheaper just to go with DSL
MSI 845e mb 768 mb ram and a p4 2.4n running xp ,win 2000 advanced server and win 98 SE alot to learn and I know so little !!!!
