I bought Redhat 7 and installed it on my newly built computer at home. I meant to make it dual boot with Win98. Now my problem is that after installing Redhat 7 I can't boot into Windows anymore... The partition is still there, i just can't access it. Not even when i use a boot disk or the win98 startup disk or the CDrom. When i try to boot that way, as soon as it tries to probe the drive, it hangs, and the HD led stays lit.
I've reinstalled windows and linux a million times now, in different ways, this last time using the latest anaconda update, but still it doesn't work. I just don't understand it, doesn't seem that i'm doing anything out of the ordinary, it should just work...
There's nothing wrong with my lilo or my bios, i have a Maxtor harddrive, nothing special. It's hard to explain what's happening, since i never figured it could ever be a problem booting even into dos from a boot disk. I put in the disk, it starts to boot up as expected but then it probes for the harddrive and it just hangs, the cursor blinks and the led stays lit, before getting to the dos prompt. I have 3 boot disks, one win98 startup disk and one windows cd. None of them work after installing redhat 7 (but work fine before), let alone booting from LiLo.
Please help :)
Roberta

hi roberta,
what's the "sequence" of your os'ses on your harddisk-partitions ? you shuold install win first, than linux.
this ist the only impact I can see at the moment (except the limitations with the 1024 - cyl - boundary, but this impact should no longer exist)greet$

Hi,
Figured out what the problem is, courtesy of Raven, popcorn ninja:
add the line "table=/dev/hda" to lilo.conf, to tell lilo where to find the mbr.
then run /sbin/liloBye,
Roberta
