Comment:

I would like to have a dual boot system with Windows XP on one drive and Mandrake 9.1 on the other drive. I have already done this sucessfully, but I do not want the LILO bootloader. I removed LILO and deleted Mandrake from the second hard drive. I want to reinstall Mandrake, but without a bootloader. However, I also do not want to use a bootdisk. What I would like to do is use BIOS to boot. For example, if I wanted to boot to XP, I would go into BIOS and select the drive with XP (C:) on it as the first boot device. If I wanted to boot Mandrake, I would choose that drive as the first boot device. In other words, I do not want Linux to change the master boot record. Is this possible, and if so, how is it done? I realize that it is probably done during the installation of Mandrake during the disk partitioning part of the installation, but this screen is slighty confusing to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I didn't delete LILO from XP, I did it from Mandrake. If you are in Linux, go to a console and type "su", without the quotes. Then type in your root password. Then type "/sbin/lilo -u", without the quotes. This should get rid of LILO, at least it worked for me. If you can't get into Linux, and you must use XP to get rid of LILO, then I think you need to use Fdisk. However, I am not sure how to do this exactly.

using your bios to boot? you have to configure your bios now and then if you want to load any of your two os.

what is your type of bios? usually a bios has a boot sequence. for example, it boots to c: first, if it fails or that the drive is not bootable then to the floppy then perhaps to the cd rom. i am not aware of a bios that is not specifically programmed for windows.

i suggest you keep lilo. there is no other boot loader that is better and as compatible to linux than it. but good luck.

i just setup my computer the way you
described out of necessesity since lilo
wouldnt boot my xp which required a reformat
of xp to correct.
but basically on the drive windows is on, do
a fresh install, this will set up the master
boot record of that drive to work with
windows, install mandrake on the other
drive, when you get to lilo installation
point place it on the mbr region of the
second disk, then alter the entries so that
only linux is an option, and you can put the
wait time to 0. then use bios to specify
boot order.
any questions send to ten.orezten@rekabap
spelled backwards with this title as subject
or else it will likely automatically be
considered junk

How do you configure Lilo to boot Linux or
Windows, I can't figure this out. I have
Linux on one hard drive and Windows on
another. (Mandrake 9.1 and XP.)
